Leader in municipal utilities and energy efficient construction
47 percent of Sweden’s energy consumption is currently sourced from renewable energy resources, placing Sweden first in a European comparison and well ahead of the EU average of 8.5 percent. Dalarna is home to many innovative small and medium sized companies that will help improve those figures further.
In 2010, the Swedish government appointed Dalarna the “Pilot Region for Green Development” with the motivation that Dalarna recognizes the benefits in the transition from an economy largely reliant on traditional Swedish base industry into a green economy. 47 percent of Sweden’s energy consumption is currently sourced from renewable energy resources and the target for 2020 is 50 percent.
Dalarna is home to many innovative small and medium sized companies in a number of fields in the cleantech industry. Municipal systems such as waste management systems, waste treatment, district heating/cooling, wastewater treatment and energy efficiency in buildings are areas where the companies in the region are at the forefront.
The industrial town going green
In a unique cooperation between the municipality and local businesses in Borlänge, an energy system has been designed for the maximum use of waste heat. The main partners are the energy company Borlänge Energi (which operates the municipality’s district heating and waste management systems and supplies green electricity) and the world leading companies SSAB Tunnplåt and Stora Enso Kvarnsveden. The trio share advanced systems for producing energy from waste heat and steam and for water and air purification.
Turning a millennium of mining into a green city
Collaboration between the global company Stora Enso, the Dalarna County Council and the Municipality of Falun has led to a unique concept and process of turning the old mining area around the Great Copper Mountain in Falun into a sustainable and green city. This is made possible through end coverage of the waste materials from the mining and treatment of the water from the mine. This procedure is unique in Sweden.
Energy efficient construction
There are several companies in Dalarna that focus on energy efficient construction. Home builder Fiskarhedenvillan has built the “House of the Future”, a private home with all the latest technology, focusing on solar energy as the main energy source. Roofing company Hedbergs Tak has built one of Sweden’s most energy efficient industrial buildings in Avesta where the energy consumption is half of what most comparable buildings demand. And Sweden’s most energy efficient office building is located in Falun. With an energy consumption of 59 kWh/m2, it is well below the recommended value of 80 kWh/m2.
World class research
Research in the solar energy field has been conducted at Dalarna University for 25 years. Today, Sweden’s largest research group in solar energy and one of Europe’s leading research groups in modern solar energy systems for private homes are to be found at the Solar Energy Research Center (SERC) on the Dalarna University campus in Borlänge. Engineering science research at the university is active in solar heat and solar electricity, and efficient energy usage in buildings and industry.
Dalarna University and SERC offer a unique one-year Master’s program in solar energy engineering at the European Solar Engineering School (ESES), which attracts students from around the world. In collaboration with the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, SERC offers a two-year Master’s program in sustainable energy engineering with a specialization in solar energy engineering.
Center of excellence
Green Business Region is an innovation and collaboration arena for cleantech companies in the Dalarna-Gävleborg region. Green Business Region aims at establishing Dalarna-Gävleborg as a leading cleantech region, where companies create new jobs by developing sustainable solutions for the future.
Leading environmental companies in different fields
Dalarna is home to many innovative small and medium sized companies working in the fields of energy generation from renewable resources, energy generation from fuels of non-fossil origin, energy transfer, energy and resource reuse and efficiency in buildings and processes, air quality, water quality, waste management, energy and environmental services and consulting, transport planning and noise abatement.
